For imports from India, FOB (Free on Board) is most common — the seller delivers the goods onto the vessel at an Indian port (Mumbai, Chennai, Nhava Sheva), and the buyer bears all costs afterward. CIF — the seller covers freight and insurance to the Russian port of destination. The choice depends on the arrangement with the supplier and logistics options.
Specify in the contract the currency your bank supports for settlements with India. Settlements in Indian rupees (INR) are limited due to conversion difficulties — some Russian banks have opened rupee correspondent accounts, but the practice is unstable. Check the current options with your bank in advance.
Yes — for both import and export. Under 173-FZ, the bank must review the contract for any currency payment. For deals from 3 million RUB, the contract is registered and assigned a unique registration number. The contract must specify delivery or service terms, deadlines, payment procedure, and both parties' details.
The main categories: pharmaceuticals and medicines (India is the world's largest producer of generics), textiles and clothing, chemical products, metals and metal products, food products (spices, tea, rice). The contract should state the HS code — our generator includes search across the full nomenclature.
For exports from Russia to India, FCA (Free Carrier) is most common — handover of the goods to the carrier in Russia. Main export categories: fertilizers, metals, energy resources, coal. Russia Trade Contract with India: A Practical Guide

Indian company details in the contract

Indian companies are registered as a Private Limited (Pvt. Ltd.) or Public Limited (Ltd.). The main identifier is the CIN (Corporate Identity Number), a 21-digit code issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA). The contract also lists the GSTIN — India's equivalent of a VAT payer ID. For bank details: India uses an IFSC code (11 characters) — a domestic bank branch identifier, and a standard SWIFT/BIC for international settlements.

India's largest export regions

Most Indian exporters are concentrated in a few states: Maharashtra (Mumbai) — pharmaceuticals, chemicals, machinery; Tamil Nadu (Chennai) — auto components, leather, textiles; Gujarat — petrochemicals, diamonds, textiles; Karnataka (Bangalore) — IT services and software. When vetting a counterparty, request an MCA21 extract and confirm the company has "Active" status.

Indian IT outsourcing: contract specifics for services

India is a world leader in IT services exports. Russian companies increasingly engage Indian developers and consultants. In a contract for importing IT services, it's critical to specify: the scope of work as an appendix, the acceptance procedure for deliverables, intellectual property rights, and the governing law. Russian governing law with arbitration at the ICAC under the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is recommended.

Logistics: shipping routes from India to Russia

Direct sea links between India and Russia are limited. Main routes: via the Suez Canal to St. Petersburg or Novorossiysk (25–35 days); via Iranian ports such as Bandar Abbas — then along the North–South International Transport Corridor (15–20 days, growing in popularity); air freight for pharmaceuticals and perishable cargo. The route affects the delivery terms and the advance-refund deadline in the contract.
