Multi-currency system

Zimbabwe has a multi-currency system: since 5 April 2024 the national currency is ZiG (Zimbabwe Gold), which co-circulates with foreign currencies, and settlements in foreign currency are permitted until 31 December 2030. State the payment currency explicitly in the contract.

Zimbabwe has not acceded to the Vienna Convention (CISG). However, the contract from the builder is governed by Russian law, and Russia is a party to the Convention, so it applies to the sale of goods as part of Russian law (Art. 1(1)(b)).

Answers on drawing up a contract with a company from Zimbabwe

Through Russian law — yes. Zimbabwe has not ratified the 1980 Vienna Convention (CISG), but the contract from the builder is governed by Russian law, and Russia is a party without an Article 95 reservation, so the Convention applies to the sale of goods as part of Russian law unless the parties exclude it. Disputes go to the ICAC at the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Zimbabwe has a multi-currency system: the Reserve Bank introduced the national currency ZiG on 5 April 2024, it co-circulates with foreign currencies, and settlements in foreign currency are permitted until 31 December 2030. Specify the payment currency in the contract.
Zimbabwe has no access to the sea. The main routes run through the port of Durban (South Africa) or Beira (Mozambique), followed by rail or road delivery. We recommend the Incoterms DAP or DDP with a clearly stated place of delivery.
